Vehicle details

The Avalanche entered sale in 2001 as Chevrolet’s full-size recreational pickup. Its four-door, two-row cabin resembled an SUV, while an open cargo bed occupied the rear. Its defining feature was the Midgate between the cabin and bed. Folding the rear seat and partition extended the load space forward, allowing long items to be carried with the tailgate closed. The removable rear window could be stored inside, and combining the extended bed with its covers created a sheltered cargo area. In the 2002 Avalanche 1500, the sequentially fuel-injected 5.3-liter LM7 V8 produced 285 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque. An electronically controlled four-speed automatic accompanied rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The 1500 used independent torsion-bar front suspension and a five-link coil-sprung rear arrangement; the heavier-duty 2500 instead used rear leaf springs. By switching space between passengers and long cargo, the Avalanche offered a different approach from a conventional pickup.
