Caprice Coupe

A Caprice coupe representing the downsizing of the full-size American car.

Selected generation models, including overseas specifications

Vehicle details

Introduced in autumn 1976, this Caprice represented the transition toward smaller American full-size passenger cars. A more compact body and new chassis addressed fuel and resource use while preserving the spacious accommodation expected of a large car. This two-door coupe used a lower roof than the sedan. Front and rear bench seats accommodated six, retaining full-size passenger space within a personal-coupe body. The 1977 model retained a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. Its 305-cubic-inch LG3 V8 used a two-barrel carburetor and produced 145 net horsepower in US federal specification, paired with a three-speed Turbo Hydra-matic automatic. A six-cylinder and a larger V8 were also offered according to body and market requirements. Sold under the Caprice Classic name, this family marked an important Chevrolet change in balancing full-size passenger space with reduced exterior size and improved operating efficiency.
