Vehicle details
The original Chevelle wagon combined midsize passenger-car engineering with a long roof and extended rear cargo area. Four side doors gave access to both seating rows, while the load compartment behind them offered a different kind of usefulness from the sedan’s separate trunk. It retained the passenger Chevelle’s 115-inch wheelbase but lengthened the rear body for a greater overall length. A front engine, rear-wheel drive, separate frame and coil springs formed the shared foundation. The 1964 version with a 194-cubic-inch inline-six and three-speed manual was the basic choice for family travel and household cargo. Within the range, the wagon emphasized carrying people and belongings together rather than the personal driving character of the coupe and convertible.
