Vehicle details
Chevette entered Chevrolet’s small-car range as interest in fuel costs and compact cars grew. The initial North American hatchback used two side doors, a rear hatch and seating for four; a cheaper version omitted the rear seat. A longitudinal four-cylinder engine drove the rear wheels, with the base 1.4-liter paired to a four-speed manual. A body about four meters long and rack-and-pinion steering suited urban driving. Although it used GM’s international T platform, this North American hatchback’s body and cabin served the local demand for inexpensive everyday transport.
