Vehicle details

The Chevy II was Chevrolet’s compact passenger-car range introduced for sale in autumn 1961. Unlike the rear-engined Corvair, it adopted the familiar arrangement of a front engine driving the rear wheels. This two-door coupe had a lower roof than the sedans. Offered in the Nova 400 range, it accommodated five in front and rear seats, adding a personal-coupe character to the compact car. For 1962, Nova 400 was the upper range with upgraded trim and interior appointments and a 194-cubic-inch Hi-Thrift inline-six. The overhead-valve engine used a single-barrel carburetor and produced 120 gross horsepower. A three-speed manual was standard, with a Powerglide automatic also available. The bodies shared a 110-inch wheelbase, providing everyday transport in a more manageable size than Chevrolet’s contemporary full-size cars. Simple styling and a useful range of bodies addressed the compact-car market and formed the starting point of the Nova family, which later developed into a separate model name.
