Vehicle details
The S-10 Blazer arrived in 1982 as Chevrolet’s compact SUV. Smaller than the full-size K5 Blazer, it combined a truck-derived frame and drivetrain with a body aimed at everyday travel and outdoor recreation. Two side doors and large rear-quarter windows defined its profile. At the back, separately opening liftglass and a downward-opening tailgate provided cargo access. Rear-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions were offered from the early range. The base engine in the 1983 US federal specification was a two-barrel 2.0-liter LQ2 inline-four producing 83 SAE net horsepower. The rear-wheel-drive version paired a floor-shift four-speed manual with coil-sprung independent front suspension. A leaf-sprung rear axle, front disc brakes and rear drums completed its truck-based layout. Four-wheel-drive models differed with front torsion bars and a two-speed transfer case, while a 2.8-liter V6 was also available. Its combination of compact dimensions and enclosed SUV cargo space helped establish Chevrolet’s smaller recreational-vehicle family.
