Vehicle details
The Volt was designed to handle everyday trips on externally charged battery energy and continue farther with help from a gasoline engine when battery charge ran low. Initial US customer deliveries began in late 2010. The 2011 model combined a liquid-temperature-managed lithium-ion battery with 16 kWh gross capacity and a 111 kW traction motor. Its 1.4-liter engine enabled continued travel over longer distances, allowing fuel stops when charging was unavailable. A carefully shaped nose and steep rear glass leading into a hatch addressed aerodynamic efficiency and luggage access. The cabin accommodated four occupants, and separately folding rear backrests expanded cargo space. Instrument and center displays presented battery status and energy flow, while regenerative braking recovered energy during deceleration. It was a significant Chevrolet production model bringing plug-in electric travel and gasoline-supported long-distance capability together.
