Vehicle details

Production of the 1949 Ford range began in 1948, bringing an entirely new passenger-car design after World War II. The Custom four-door sedan has smooth body sides, separate front and rear doors and a conventional trunk. Developed under Henry Ford II with styling by George Walker, it represents Ford’s transition back to postwar passenger-car production. The 1949 US V8 specification pairs a 239.4-cubic-inch L-head engine with a three-speed manual transmission. Its frame construction combines independent front coil-spring suspension, rear semi-elliptic leaf springs and hydraulic drum brakes. Fresh bodywork and a roomy cabin established a new direction beyond Ford’s prewar cars.
