Vehicle details
The original Escort arrived in 1968 as a small European Ford passenger car. Its compact two-door sedan body features a wide grille surrounding round headlamps. A longitudinal front engine drives the rear wheels through a manual gearbox and propeller shaft. The OHV inline-four uses a crossflow layout with intake and exhaust on opposite sides. Independent coil-spring front suspension and a leaf-sprung live rear axle provide a straightforward mechanical layout. Developed around the everyday family sedan, the range also included estates and performance versions, establishing the Escort nameplate.
