Vehicle details
Introduced in 1977, the Fairmont is a family passenger car with rectilinear bodywork and a straightforward cabin. The four-door sedan provides a separate trunk and seating for five. The base US specification for 1979 combines a DuraSpark-ignition 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission and floor-mounted shifter. Front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering accompany coil springs at both ends and a four-link rear suspension layout. The wider range also included a two-door sedan and wagon, with optional 3.3-liter inline-six and 5.0-liter V8 engines. Its useful passenger space and basic everyday convenience reflect a practical approach to the Ford family car.
