Vehicle details
Introduced in 1977, the Fairmont wagon adds a long roof and large rear opening to the passenger-car range. The 1979 US specification seats five, and its folding rear seat creates an extended load area. An upward-opening tailgate uses concealed hinges and gas-filled lift assistance, while a cargo light and low load floor aid luggage handling. Its standard powertrain combines a 2.3-liter four-cylinder with a floor-shifted four-speed synchronized manual transmission. Coil springs at both ends, a four-link rear suspension, front disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering form the chassis. This practical Fairmont body combines passenger-car seating with the ability to carry bulky items.
