Vehicle details
Going on sale in 1964, the Mustang attracted new buyers by combining an accessible price with sporting looks and a wide choice of equipment. The hardtop is a two-door fixed-roof body with front and rear seating. Its long bonnet, short rear deck, sculpted flanks and segmented rear lamps established a distinctive appearance. The engine is mounted at the front and drives the rear wheels; the 289 High Performance V8 uses a four-barrel carburettor and mechanically adjusted valves. A four-speed manual gearbox was available, while independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung rear axle retained a practical everyday layout. Separate convertible and fastback bodies broadened its appeal.
