Vehicle details
First sold in late 1985, the original Taurus brought a rounded body and smooth glass surfaces to an American market familiar with angular sedans. Concealed rain gutters, closely fitted windows and airflow-conscious underbody and bumper shapes contributed to its appearance. A front-mounted engine drives the front wheels, with independent suspension at all four corners. The sedan uses MacPherson struts at the front and a parallel-link strut arrangement at the rear; a wagon was also offered with a different rear suspension layout. The base L sedan pairs a 2.5-liter inline-four with a three-speed automatic transaxle, while higher versions use a fuel-injected 3.0-liter V6 and four-speed automatic. The family-oriented cabin emphasizes accessible instruments and controls.
