Vehicle details
Introduced in 1933, the Model 40 reflected Ford’s effort to bring V8 power to a wider public. The compact length of the V8 gave designers more freedom at the front, while the rearward-sloping radiator grille and rounded body showed the emerging influence of streamlining. Its four-door sedan body combines a fixed roof over two seating rows with separate projecting fenders and side running boards. A water-cooled side-valve V8 is mounted at the front and drives the rear wheels through a three-speed manual gearbox. Bringing the smoothness and power associated with more expensive V8 cars into a lower price range helped Ford compete with Chevrolet’s inline-six models.
