The 944 is a sports coupe using a front-mounted water-cooled engine connected to a rear gearbox and differential in a transaxle arrangement. Wide wheel arches and a large rear hatch distinguish its shape, with luggage space behind the cabin. The base version in Porsche’s German/English brochure has a 2,479 cc inline-four producing 120 kW or 163 PS. Two auxiliary balance shafts reduce engine vibration, and transmission choices are a five-speed manual or three-speed automatic. It measures 4,200 mm long, 1,735 mm wide and 1,275 mm high.
